Job description

A specialist engineering support business operating at the critical interface between design intent and construction execution is seeking to appoint a Structural Engineer of Record (SER) to support high-risk, time-sensitive projects across the construction sector.

The role is both design- and oversight-focused, requiring a strong technical foundation in structural engineering combined with the ability to act as the responsible engineer for signed-off designs. The successful candidate will be accountable for ensuring that all structural works meet regulatory requirements, safety standards, and project specifications.

This position involves close collaboration with multidisciplinary engineering teams, architects, contractors, and project stakeholders to ensure the safe, efficient, and compliant delivery of structural solutions from concept through to completion.

Key Responsibilities:

Structural Design & Engineering Sign-Off

  • Lead and review structural designs for buildings and infrastructure projects
  • Take responsibility as Engineer of Record for assigned projects
  • Ensure compliance with SANS codes, building regulations, and engineering standards
  • Review and approve structural calculations, drawings, and design documentation

Site Inspections & Technical Oversight

  • Conduct structural site inspections during construction phases
  • Verify compliance of works with approved designs and specifications
  • Identify and resolve structural defects, deviations, and risks on site
  • Provide technical guidance to contractors and site teams

Analysis, Modelling & Design Validation

  • Perform structural analysis and modelling for complex engineering systems
  • Validate designs produced by junior engineers and technicians
  • Recommend design improvements for safety, efficiency, and cost optimisation

Project Delivery & Coordination

  • Work closely with architects, civil engineers, and project managers
  • Provide input into project planning, sequencing, and constructability reviews
  • Ensure timely delivery of structural engineering outputs within project timelines

Compliance, Risk & Quality Assurance

  • Ensure adherence to engineering codes, safety standards, and statutory requirements
  • Manage engineering risk associated with structural integrity and design execution
  • Maintain quality assurance across all structural deliverables

Reporting & Documentation

  • Prepare technical reports, design certificates, and structural assessments
  • Maintain accurate project documentation and engineering records
  • Support handover documentation and as-built verification

Minimum Requirements

  • BEng / BSc Civil Engineering (Structural)
  • Registered Professional Engineer (PrEng / PE) – mandatory
  • 3–5 years’ experience in structural design and inspection
  • Strong knowledge of structural analysis and design principles
  • Experience with structural engineering software (AutoCAD, Revit, SAP2000, ETABS or equivalent)
  • Solid understanding of building codes, standards, and regulatory frameworks
  • Strong site experience and ability to interpret construction methodology
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and technical reporting skills
