Job description
A specialist engineering support business operating within high-risk, execution-driven construction environments is seeking to appoint a Steel Construction & Bolting Inspector to support structural steel works across complex project sites.
The organisation operates at the intersection of design intent and construction delivery, providing practical, site-focused engineering and inspection services where quality, compliance, and safety are critical. The role is highly site-based and focused on ensuring that structural steel installation and bolting activities meet strict international standards and project specifications.
The successful candidate will be responsible for inspection, verification, and quality assurance of structural steel and bolted connections, ensuring that all work is executed in accordance with approved designs, codes, and best practices. This role requires a strong understanding of steel construction methodologies, attention to detail, and the ability to operate effectively in fast-paced, high-pressure environments.
Key Responsibilities
Structural Steel Inspection & Compliance
- Inspect structural steel erection and bolting activities on site
- Verify compliance with approved drawings, specifications, and standards
- Ensure correct installation of high-strength bolted connections
- Monitor torque and tensioning processes in line with project requirements
Quality Assurance & Control
- Identify non-conformances, defects, and deviations from specifications
- Recommend and monitor corrective actions to ensure compliance
- Support implementation of QA/QC processes across steel works
- Ensure adherence to international codes such as AISC, ASTM, and ISO
Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain accurate inspection records and reports
- Review Inspection Test Plans (ITPs), method statements, and quality documentation
- Compile inspection reports and communicate findings to project stakeholders
Site Coordination & Technical Support
- Liaise with contractors, engineers, and site teams on quality and compliance matters
- Provide guidance on steel construction and bolting practices
- Support resolution of site-related quality issues
Safety & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with site safety standards during inspection activities
- Identify risks related to structural steel installation and bolting
- Promote safe and compliant construction practices on site
Minimum Requirements
- Technical Diploma or relevant trade qualification
- ICC Structural Steel & Bolting Special Inspector certification
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in structural steel inspection
- Strong knowledge of steel erection and bolting practices
- Understanding of international construction codes (AISC, ASTM, ISO or equivalent)
- Ability to read and interpret structural drawings and specifications
- Strong attention to detail and quality-focused mindset
- Proven ability to work effectively in site-based, high-pressure environments
