Job description

A leading mining major projects team is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to provide high-level guidance and accountability oversight of Mechanical Contractors. This execution role on Groote Eylandt ensures safe, efficient project outcomes delivered on schedule, within budget and to quality standards.

Minimum Requirements:
• Relevant Mechanical Engineering qualification
• Current Australian driver's licence
• Minimum 10 years' demonstrated experience in heavy industrial/mining environment
• Proven contractor management experience
• Document writing and work package compilation experience
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
• Strong problem-solving, critical thinking and strategic planning skills
• Excellent communication, negotiation and stakeholder management skills
• Understanding of project schedules and budgets
• Positive, flexible and dynamic approach
• Proficiency in English
• Remote work experience in arduous conditions (desirable)

Key Responsibilities:
• Provide high-level guidance and accountability oversight of Mechanical Contractors
• Step up as Construction Manager delegate and represent Major Projects team when required
• Champion project safety culture and lead by example on workplace health and safety
• Deliver safety-in-design advice, constructability reviews and engineering input during feasibility
• Develop construction schedules, budget forecasts and pre-commitment funding estimates
• Develop tender documentation and Scopes of Work (SOW) aligned with client and regulatory requirements
• Conduct tender evaluation and contract award processes
• Manage vendor liaison, TQ/RFI responses and maintain procurement/logistics registers
• Ensure technical specifications and QA/QC requirements are met by vendors
• Provide on-site engineering support and issue Site Instructions (SI) and Non-Compliance Reports (NCR)
• Act as liaison between Contractors, South32 stakeholders and contracting parties
• Review and approve integrated construction work packs and as-built drawings for handover
• Conduct site audits for safety and quality compliance with supervisors and Contractors
• Escalate issues to Project/Construction Manager for timely resolution
• Contribute to lessons learnt and project review processes
